13 Reasons Why: Cassette 4

Side A:
Literary Elements:
Narration by both Clay and Hannah once again. Clay is at Rosie's Diner listening to Hannah speak about Zach Dempsey. Clay seems both mentally and physically exhausted. The stress over the tapes and the lies he has told to his mother about where he is are really starting to get to him. Clay is obsessed and very emotional. The conflict in this chapter was that a boy named Zach Dempsey tried to hit on Hannah in front of all of his friends and she paid him no attention. To get revenge from his embarrassment, Zach decided to get back at Hannah n a childish way. In their peer communications class, the teacher made students right anonymous nice notes to each other and put them in each other's boxes. Zach decided to steal all of the nice notes that Hannah received before she could read them, and in turn make her think that nobody sent her any notes. Without the notes, Hannah lost hope. However she was a bit biased because Zach did not know what Hannah was going through, if he had known, he wouldn't have done what he did.

Themes
Revenge- Zach decided to get revenge on Hannah
Hopelessness- Hannah was already upset with how her life was going and she began to lose hope.
Sadness- Hannah was sad that nobody was sending her notes.
Guilt- Clay feels extremely guilty that he did nothing to help Hannah when he could.

Quotes
-"No one knows for certain how much impact they have on the lives of other people. Oftentimes, we have no clue. Yet we push it the same". (Pg. 156)
-"I sat. And I thought. And the more I thought, connecting the events of my life, the more my heart collapsed". (Pg. 160)
-"When you try rescuing someone and discover they can't be reached, why would you ever throw it back in their face". (Pg. 161)
-"But you must have a slow boil, getting more and more angry-taking it more and more personally-the longer you thought about my non responsiveness. And you chose to get back at me in the most childish ways. You stole my paper bag notes of encouragement". (Pg. 163)
-"I needed change, just like they said. So I changed my appearance. The only thing I had control over". (Pg. 163)
-"I hope you understand. My world was collapsing. I needed those notes. I needed any hope those notes might have offered. And you? You took that hope away. You decided I didn't deserve to have it". (Pg. 165)
-"This isn't fair. If Zach had any idea what Hannah was going through, I'm sure he wouldn't have stole her notes". (Pg. 166)
-"I wasn't worth an explanation-not even a reaction. Not in your eyes, Zach". (Pg.168)

Personal
I felt bad for Clay when he almost cried thinking about Hannah. I feel like these tapes are making him go insane and I'm scared about what will happen when he hears his name. I think both Clay's mom and his school friend Tony know what he's doing. His lies are catching up to him. I still believe that Clay could have changed things for Hannah, he could have prevented her suicide. My favourite part of this chapter was when Hannah decided to catch Zach stealing her notes. I like how Hannah is smart enough to devise plans in order to catch the people doing her wrong. This books seems to be getting more interesting as it goes on. I still want to know who the last person is, I think  it's Clay.

Side B: (D-7 on the map is the community room at the library)
Literary Elements:
Both Clay and Hannah Narrate. Clay reflects on  his feelings towards Hannah and thinks back to when they worked at the movie theater together. He is still sad about what happened to Hannah. The conflict in this chapter is when a boy in Hannah's poetry group, named Ryan Shaver, read Hannah's poem. He realized that the poem had a deeper meaning than what Hannah claimed it had, he ended up stealing the poem and put it out there for the school to read and give there opinions on it. This hurt Hannah badly because of the true meaning of the poem, and some people even made fun of the poem.

Themes
Theft- Ryan stole her poem.
Hopelessness- Hannah continuously runs out of hope.
Sadness- Both Hannah and clay are sad about the events that took place.
Hate- Clay hates himself for waiting to long to tell Hannah how he felt.

Quotes
-"Because Hannah had a reputation. A reputation that scared me". (Pg. 180)
-"Well, Ryan, you were right. It went much deeper than that. And if you knew that-if that's what you thought-then why did you steal my notebook? Why did you print my poem, the poem that you yourself called "scary" in the Lost-N-Found? Why did you let other people read it? And dissect it. And make fun of it". (Pg. 189)

Personal
I can tell that Hannah has almost nothing left, even her parents are to busy for her. Clay is also deeply hurt that he did nothing to help when he could have. I feel like Clay may commit suicide when this is all over. I dislike Ryan for stealing the poem because he knew it meant a lot to Hannah. It was a stupid action which should have never been committed. Nothing positive really happened in this chapter, therefore I don't have a favourite part in this section.
