Hannah Baker is dead from suicide. 7 Tapes, made before she died are now being passed around to the 13 people who are responsible. Along with the tape, she leaves a map with specific places marked on it for the 13 people to get a better idea of her story. Clay Jensen receives the tapes and awaits for his name to be mentioned.
Side A: (The slide where Hannah had her first kiss is the first location)
Literary Elements
-Dual Narration between Hannah and Clay.
-Hannah speaks about Justin who was her fist kiss. Speaks as if she had real feelings for him.
-Speaks as if she was hurt by what he did.
-Clay is nervous about what will be said about him. He is also embarrassed and scared for others to find out that he technically aided Hannah's suicide.
The conflict is that after their first kiss, nasty rumors about Justin and Hannah were being spread and it was giving Hannah the wrong kind of reputation. However Justin did nothing to stop it.
Quotes
"Betrayal. It's one of the worst feelings. I know you didn't mean to let me down. In fact, most of you listening probably had no idea what you were doing-what you were truly doing".
Themes
Anticipation- Clay is awaiting his name to be mentioned.
Guilt- Clay knows he did something to add to her suicide.
Betrayal- Hannah feels betrayed by Justin
Helplessness- Hannah was helpless in trying to stop the rumors.
Contextualizing
Text to World- This is a common thing that can happen to people all over the world. When rumors start it is difficult to stop it, and you don't always have control over it. I have seen episodes of TV shows with the exact same plot and outcome. For example there was an episode of "Boy Meets World" where a rumor was being spread that the main character and a girl had spent the night together. It that situation it also ruined the girls reputation even though it wasn't true.
Personal
So far the book seems really interesting and intriguing. If Justin is only the first person, I am curious to know who is number 13. So far I dislike Justin because he did absolutely nothing to stop the rumors. In a situation like that, a guy would be idolized for having people believe that him and a girl did things like that. However, a girl would typically have the complete opposite experience. She would probably be referred to as a slut by other girls and get the wrong kind of attention from guys. I'm upset at the fact that Justin did not sop the rumors because he could have ended things and in result he could have continued his relationship with Hannah. I also feel bad for Hannah because she did not deserve that, especially because she was new at the school.
Side B: (B-3 on the map is Blue Spot Liquor)
Literary Elements:
Dual Narration between Hannah and Clay
The Conflict is that Alex Standall made a list about the girls with the best asses in freshmen class and put Hannah's name in the "Hot" side parallel to one of her new friends on the "Not" side.
-This caused guys to treat her different. A guy named Wally even smacked Hannah's ass at one point.
-The effects of the list seemed to really bother Hannah.
-She speaks very sarcastically towards Alex.
-The List was for revenge purposes against the girl parallel to Hannah.
-Hannah admits that the list caused various other stuff to happen to her.
Quotes
-"I don't think my ass-as you call it- was the deciding factor, I think the deciding factor ...was revenge". (pg.40)
-"Every Single event documented here may never have happened had you, Alex, not written my name on that list. It's that simple". (Pg. 41)
-"This tape isn't about what you did, Alex. It's about the repercussions of what you did. More specially, it's about the repercussions to me. It's about the things you didn't plan-things you couldn't plan".
-"Alex, am I saying your list gave him permission to grab my ass? No. I'm saying it gave him an excuse. And an excuse was all this guy needed. (Pg. 52)
-"There are some sick twisted people out there, Alex-and maybe I'm one of them-but the point is, when you hold people up for ridicule, you have to take responsibility when other people act on it". (Pg. 53)
Themes
Revenge- Alex was seeking revenge against the girl he put parallel to Hannah's name.
Annoyance- Hannah was annoyed at the effects the list had on how people treated her.
Ridicule- People thought of the list as a joke and made fun of people on the "Not" side.
Contextualizing
Text to world- This reminds me of when I was in elementary school and a boy in my grade did the exact same thing. Except he made a list only for the guys to see and he didn't pass it around for everyone like what the Alex character did in the book.
Personal
I feel bad for Hannah because once again she did not deserve it. I think Alex, should not have passed around the list for people to see. If anything he should have made it just for himself and maybe a few friends...but not the whole grade. My favourite part of this chapter was when Wally smacked Hannah's ass. I thought it was funny the way the author wrote it and I liked how Hannah went through step by step in order to tell the listener's why that upset her so much. I don't think Alex is a bad guy, I think he was mainly just joking around. In his mind he could have been thinking that putting Hannah on the list would flatter her. However it was still a bad idea.
