Side A: (C-6 on the map, Five-Twelve Cottonwood)
Clay and Tony listen to the tape in Tony's car. Hannah speaks about Clay on this tape and Clay is nervous for what he is about to hear. Tony is very serious about this. Hannah seems to have really liked Clay as well and she thinks of him differently than the others on the tapes. The conflict was that at a party that they all went to, Clay and Hannah finally got some alone time. They ended up kissing in an upstairs bedroom but the happiness did not last. When clay apologized for taking so long to tell her how he felt during the kiss, Hannah had a breakdown. She started thinking about Justin and all the people who hurt her in the past. She yelled at Clay and told him to leave the room and even though he was in shock, he did what she asked. She was being a little biased on her side because most guys would have done the same thing if they were in Clay's position.
Themes
Love- Both Hannah and Clay hint at the fact they made have loved one another.
Confusion- Hannah was confused about what she wanted and how she was feeling.
Mystery- Clay was in disbelief and wasn't sure what was going on with Hannah
Quotes
-"And when you mess with one part of a person's life, you're not messing with just that part. Unfortunately, you can't be that precise and selective. When you mess with one part of a person's life, you're messing with their entire life". (Pg. 201)
-"How many times had I let myself connect with someone only to have it thrown back in my face? Everything seemed good, but I knew it had the potential to be awful. Much, much more painful than the others". (Pg. 213)
-"The last time I cared what anyone thought about me was that night". (Pg. 214)
-"And that's when I thought of you, Justin. For the first time in a ling time, I thought of our first kiss. My real first kiss. I remembered the anticipation leading up to it. I remembered your lips pressed against mine. And then I remembered how you ruined it". (Pg. 215)
-"Could you feel what I was going through, Clay? Did you sense it? You must have". (Pg. 215)
-"I was there for you, Hannah. You could have reached out but you didn't. You chose this. You hada choice and you pushed me away. I would hae helped you. I wanted to help". (Pg. 217)
-"My anger and frustration with all of you turned to tears and then back to anger and hate everytime I found a new connection". (Pg. 217)
Personal
I feel like it wasn't Clay's fault because he didn't do anything wrong. I agree that he should have stayed and helped her but at the end of the day she told him to leave and didn't want to open up to him. I don't understand why they stopped talking after that, they should have made up. Clay should have reached out to her because they obviously had feelings for each other. In my opinion I believe they loved each other and I'm sad that she's dead so they can never be together.
Side B:
Literary Elements:
Dual narration between Hannah and Clay. Hannah and Clay are both in disbelief and disgust due to the events of this chapter. The conflict in this chapter is that after Clay left Hannah in the room, she over heard Justin and another boy from school in the hallway. Justin brought Jessica, who was passed out from being drunk, into an upstairs room and one of Justin's friends wanted to have sex with her while she was unconscious. Obviously this is rape and even though Justin tried to prevent it at first, he ended up letting it happen. Hannah feels horrible about it and feels like she could have stopped it if she tried.
Themes
Regret- Hannah regrets not stopping the rape.
Disgust- Hannah, Justin, and Clay were in utter disgust by what happened.
Sorrow- Hannah is so sorry that she didn't help.
Quotes
-"So what do you think of him now, Justin? Do you hate him? Your friend that raped her, is he still your friend?". (Pg. 230)
-"Because if he didn't do anything wrong, and you didn't do anything wrong, then I didn't do anything wrong. And you have no idea how much I wish I didn't ruin that girls life. But I did. At the very least, I helped. And so did you". (Pg. 230)
-"No, you're right, you didn't rape her. And I didn't rape her. He did. But you...and I...we let it happen. It'sour fault". (Pg. 231)
Personal
I'm upset about what happened in this chapter. I think the guy who did it is nasty and deserves to be caught for his crime. I think Justin is a fool for not stopping it and I think Hannah should have done something. I feel bad for the girl who got raped because she did no deserve that. This chapter was pretty sad and I didn't really have a favourite part, however the book is getting more and more interesting as it goes on.
