Side A:
The narration is carried out by Hannah and Clay once again. The conflict in the chapter revolves around what happened when Hannah got a ride home from the party by her friend from school. On their way home, Hannah's friend hit into a stop sign and knocked it over. Hannah insisted that they stay there and call the cops but her friend thought differently. They argued and Hannah was kicked out that car and had to walk. Little did they know that with no stop sign on the corner another accident resulting in the death of a senior classmate would take place.
Themes
Death- The senior from school died in the car crash.
Guilt- Hannah felt guilty that she did nothing about the stop sign.
Grievance- Everyone mourns over the students death.
Quote
-"Because on that corner, there wasn't a stop sign that night. Someone had knocked it over and someone else...yours truly...could've stopped it". (Pg. 248)
-Free to think. And what did I do? For the first time, I thought of my own funeral". (Pg. 248)
-"You'd like to forget what we did-what happened with your car and the stop sign. The repercussions. But you never will". (Pg. 249)
-"I liked the Hannah that I met that night. Maybe I even loved her. But you decided not to let that happen, Hannah. It was you who decided". (Pg. 249)
Personal
I honestly think Hannah should not have blamed herself as much as she did for not calling the police. It was her friends fault, not so much Hannah's. I think Clay feels even stronger about Hannah then he did before and it's almost as if he knows her better because of the tapes then he did from talking to her in person. I felt bad for the people in the car crash, especially the for the senior who died. It was another accident that should have never occurred but what's done is done.
Side B:
Hannah and Clay narrate. Hannah speaks very calm and content. She admits that she is giving up on everything in her life. The conflict in this chapter is that Bryce hits on Hannah while they are in the hot tub at Courtney's house. Even thought Hannah did not want to do it she ended up losing her virginity to Bryce in her attempt of completely letting go of everything.
Themes
Anger- Clay was angry at Bryce and himself
Exhaustion- Hannah was mentally exhausted and freed/let go of herself
Quotes
-"Bryce, you had to see my jaw clench. You had to see my tears. Does that kinds if shit turn you on?Bryce? Yes. It does. And just like that, I let go". (Pg.264)
-"So congratulations, Bryce. You're the one. I let my reputation catch up with me-I let my reputation become me-with you. How does it feel?". (Pg. 265)
-"Before that party, I'd thought about giving up so many times. I don't know, maybe some people are just preconditioned to think about it more than others. Because every time something bad happened, I thought about it". (Pg. 253)
-"But sometimes I took things further and wondered how I would do it. I would tuck myself into bed and wonder if there was anything in the house I could use". (Pg. 253)
Personal
I don't really understand why Hannah would do that with Bryce, its her own fault for getting into the hot tub with him. I know that it was hard for Clay to listen to that tape because he had real feelings for Hannah. This chapter made me dislike both Hannah and Bryce because they both did things I did not like. I feel like Hannah brought certain things upon herself and blamed it on other people. Hannah should have been stronger than that and resisted. Personally this chapter was really interesting but I didn't particularly like it.
