13 Reasons Why: Cassette 2

Side A:
Literary Elements
Clay listens to the tape as Hannah narrates and speaks about befriending Alex and Jessica. Although they were not the closest of friends, Hannah seemed to have really enjoyed their friendly meetings at "Monet's" which was their hangout spot. Here they would vent to each other about their current thoughts and concerns in their lives. Hannah claims that her friendship with Alex and Jessica was never that serious to begin with and it eventually faded. However after Alex had made the "Who's Hot/Who's Not" list and put Jessica's name on the "Not" side parallel to Hannah's on the "Hot" side, there were rumors being spread about Hannah and Alex being intimate which upset Jessica since she liked Alex. This caused the conflict because even though Hannah tried explaining to Jessica that the rumors were not true, Jessica would not believe her and had her mind made up. She hit Hannah in the face and left a scar above her eyebrow before they parted ways. This conflict was never resolved.

Themes
Anger- Jessica was mad/angry at Hannah because of the rumors she was hearing.
Blindness- Jessica could not see that Hannah was also a victim in all this and she did nothing wrong.
Deceit- Alex was the mastermind behind the list which deceived Jessica into thinking that something was going on between Alex and Hannah.

Quotes
-"At that moment I would have paid dearly for Jessica's friendship. She was the most outgoing, honest, tell-it-like-it-is girl I'd ever met". (Pg. 61)
-"It's a knife in my back because you would rather believe some made-up rumor than what you knew to be true" (Pg. 68)
-"Jessica, my dear, I'd really love to know if you dragged yourself to my funeral. And if you did, did you notice your scar? And what about you-the rest of you- did you notice the scars you left behind? No. Probably not. That wasn't possible". (Pg. 68)

Contextualizing
This chapter reminds me of an episode of a TV show called "Proud Family" in which the main character had rumors being spread about her and no one would believe her when she claimed they weren't true. Even her best friends were skeptical and wouldn't believe her, as a result she ended up almost fighting the girl that started the rumors.

Personal
I personally don't think what happened to Hannah in this chapter was that bad. She claimed there friendship was never strong to begin with so I doubt she was that upset when it ended. However I think Hannah should have fought back when Jessica hit her because that was unnecessary and out of line. Even if the rumors were true, Jessica had no right to hit Hannah and she is stupid for not seeing that Hannah did nothing wrong. Although Hannah did not deserve to get hit, it was actually my favourite part of the chapter because it was the most exciting part. I dislike Jessica for being so sensitive to something that wasn't that serious and I think Hannah should have tried harder to convince Jessica that she was right. Jessica should have focused her hate more towards Alex and not Hannah because Alex was the cause for everything.

Side B: (A-4 on the map is outside Tyler Down's House)
Literary Elements
Clay narrates about half the chapter while Hannah narrates the other half. On this tape Hannah speaks about Tyler Down who is a boy from school. She calls Tyler a "Peeping Tom" because she found out that he had been looking through her window and watching her. Hannah seems utterly disgusted and creeped out by Tyler's actions, she speaks very sarcastically towards him while Clay is surprised at the fact that Tyler would do such a thing. The conflict stats after Hannah finds out that someone had been watching her from her window and she had to find a way to catch the person. With help from another girl a school she finds out it was Tyler.

Themes
Revenge- Hannah wanted revenge against Tyler for what he did.
Disgust- Hannah was disgusted at the fact Tyler was watching her while she was indecent.
Trickery/Craftiness- Hannah and a girl from school put on a show for Tyler while he is watching and end up catching him in the act.

Quotes
-"What if she...what if I...found out? Guess what, Tyler Down? I found out". (Pg. 75)
-"So tell me Tyler, those nights you stood outside my window, was I spontaneous enough for you? Did you catch me in all my natural, unposed..." (Pg. 77)
-"After  all that's why I'm here, right? Revenge? No. Revenge would have been fun. Revenge, in a twisted way, would have given me some sense of satisfaction. But this, standing outside Tyler's window, satisfies nothing. My mind is made up". (Pg. 83)
-"But your presence, Tyler, that never left. After your visits, I twisted my blinds shut every night. I locked out the stars and I never saw lightning again. Each night, I simply turned out the lights and went to bed. Why didn't you leave me alone, Tyler? My house, My bedroom. They were supose to be safe for me. Safe from everything outside. But you were the one who took that away. Well...not all of it. But you took away what was left". (Pg. 89)
-"So how important is your security, Tyler? What about your privacy? Maybe it's not as important to you as it is to me, but that's not for you to decide". (Pg. 89)

Contextualizing
This reminds me of an episode of a TV show called "Zack & Cody" in which the two main characters look through a hole in the wall of a room in their hotel and peep on a girl's sports team that was staying in the hotel. In the episode Zack and Cody get caught just like Tyler did in this chapter.

Personal
I found this chapter really funny and clever. I liked how Hannah and the girl from school had put on a show for Tyler when he was watching. I enjoyed how they acted like they didn't know he was watching and taking pictures and then at the last second they ran to the window and opened it. My favourite part was when the girl from school laughed at the site of Tyler pulling his pants up and running away, I thought that was hilarious. I know in Hannah's mind she was disgusted at the fact that Tyler was trying to masturbate to them. I think Hannah should have exposed Tyler right after that because he deserved it. Even though he deserved it, I actually do not dislike Tyler because what he did gave me a good laugh. So far I am really enjoying this book and I am anticipating the chapter in which Clay's name is mentioned.
