13 Reasons Why: Cassette 3

Side A: (D-F on the map is Courtney's House)
Literary Elements
Dual narration between Hannah and Clay takes place. Hannah speaks about Courtney Crimsen and once again Hannah has a hint of sarcasm in her voice. It is clear that she was a sarcastic person. You can also feel the hatred in her voice even though she claims that she does not hate Courtney for what she did. The conflict in this chapter is that The conflict is that Courtney Crimson (who is revealed as the girl who helped Hannah with Tyler) was using Hannah and was not really Hannah's friend. Courtney just liked the idea of everyone liking her, she was not befriending Hannah because she actually enjoyed spending time with her. Courtney asks Hannah to go to a party with her but for all the wrong reasons.

Themes
Fraud- Courtney was not a real friend, she was basically faking.
Deception- She made Hannah believe that they were really friends.
Fallacy- She mislead Hannah and was of false nature.

Quotes
-"I don't think you do this intentionally, Courtney. And that's why I put you on these tapes. To let you know that what you do affects others. More specifically, it affected me". (Pg. 95)
-"So this is where I give you credit. You could have taken the bitch route and still had all the friends and boyfriends you could handle. But instead you took the sweet route, so everyone would like you and not a sou would hate you". (Pg. 95)
-"I do not hate you, Courtney. In fact, I don't even dislike you. But for a time I thought you and I were becoming friends. Turns out you were just grooming me to be another tally mark under People Who Think Courtney Crimsen Is a Really Neat Girl". (Pg. 95)
-"But that, evidently, is what we'd become once again. We said hello in the halls and sometimes you said good-bye to me after class, but never more than you said it to anybody else. Until the night of the party. Until the night you needed me again". (Pg. 97)
-"I don't belong on those tapes. Hannah just wanted an excuse to kill herself". (Pg.110) (Marcus)
-"What he was about to say was just an aftereffect of someone else's actions-someone else's callousness". (Pg. 113)

Personal
I disliked how Courtney told a boy at the party a lie about what Hannah had in the dresser in her room. There was nothing in there but Courtney told a boy that Hannah hid "secret stuff" in there which was untrue. I feel like Hannah should have confronted Courtney more effectively, if I was in her shoes I probably would have fought Courtney. My favourite part of the chapter was when Clay spoke to Marcus Cooley (A kid from school) and found out that he was also on the tapes. This was my favourite part because Clay was defensive against Hannah and almost threw a rock at Marcus when he said that Hannah just wanted a reason to kill herself. That was the most exciting part of the chapter in my opinion and I wish Clay would have thrown the rock at him.

Side B: (E-5 on the map is Rosie's Diner)
Literary Elements
Once again it is dual narration between Hannah and Clay. Hannah is now speaking about Marcus Cooley, a boy from school who Clay is very familiar with. It's easy to infer that Hanna does not trust Marcus at all. When the Dollar Valentines were setting people up on dates and Marcus claimed it set her up with him, she did not even believe him at first. Regretfully, she gave him a chance and agreed to go on a date with him. The conflict is that after Marcus' big commotion about her being number one on his Dollar Valentine List, she agreed to go on a date with him and he stood her up.

Themes
Regret- She wished that she had never agreed to go on a date with him.
Disappointment- She was in disbelief and disappointment when he did not show up.
Hatred- She began to hate Marcus.
Loneliness- She felt Lonely at Rosie's Diner waiting for him.

Quotes
- "You're an ass, Marcus You stood her up when you never had to ask her out to begin with". (Pg. 139)
-"Apparently, he thought we were joking about the date. Or he assumed we were joking about the date. But halfway home, he stopped, thought about it, and headed to Rosie's just in case". (Pg. 140)
-"That's why you are on this tape. You turned around just in case. Just in case I, Hannah Baker-Miss Reputation-was waiting for you. And sadly, I was. At the time, I just thought it might  be fun. At the time, I was stupid". (Pg. 140)
-"See when Marcus came into Rosie's, he wasn't alone. No, Marcus came into Rosie's with a plan. Part of that plan was to move us away from the counter to a booth near the back. Near the pinball machines. With me in the inside. Me, sandwiched between him...and a wall". (Pg. 140)

Personal
I felt bad for Hannah because she gave Marcus a chance even when she didn't trust him and it resulted in exactly what she was expecting. He stood her up and I felt like his reason was stupid. Clay reveals that had feelings for Hannah and I feel bad for him because now that she is dead he will never have his chance with her. I honestly believe Clay could have changed things for Hannah and helped turn her life around. My favourite part of the chapter was when Marcus showed up really late to the date and Hannah agreed to stay and finish the date. This was my favourite part because when they had their date, Marcus tried to slide his hand up Hannah's shirt and she threw him to the floor. Once again I was laughing and I felt like Marcus really deserved what he got because she told him to stop and he didn't. I really enjoy that this book always has parts that make me laugh because it keeps me interested.
