13 Reasons Why: Contextualizing

Text-to-World
This book was truly relevant to many things that are happening in the world today. Every year there are people who commit suicide and many of them do it as a result of being bullied. Although Hannah never admitted to being bullied, some of the events that took place were in fact bullying. Hannah's suicide in this book reminds me of a real life girl who committed suicide by drinking bleach after being cyber bullied. They are similar because the people responsible for pushing both girls to suicide were their classmates and people from school. This book can teach valuable lessons to people all around the world, we must start to think before we act and treat each other properly. The book made me think about my life, my school, and my friends. It made me realize how lucky I am to have real friends and it helped to teach me the definition of what a real "friend" is. I believe this book could in fact prevent many people from committing suicide in our world. It shows us that there are always people who care about us and there is always another option besides killing ourselves. This book showed me that people's intentions don't always turn out like they were expected to, a lot of the times people's intentions could have been meant for good but they end up going wrong. "13 Reasons Why" gave an insightful look at the people who were affected by someone else's suicide and now it's clear to see that suicide doesn't do good for anyone. We were all put on this Earth for a reason and it would be a shame not to live long enough to find out what that reason is. With that being said, "13 Reason's Why" was an amazing book that I would recommend to people all around the world. Now anytime I hear about someone being bullied, having a bad day, being stressed or committing suicide, I will immediately think of this book.

Text-to-Text
This book can relate a few of things I have read throughout my life. Just the other day in English class we read a a short story about a beautiful girl who was only noticed for her looks and was never truly loved for who she was on the inside. She ended up committing suicide and a man who was recently starting to fall for her, never got his chance to say goodbye. This is a lot like the book "13 Reasons Why" because Hannah commits suicide because she feels like no one truly cares for her and she has been hurt way to many times, she saw no other way out of her predicament. Just like in the short story, Clay, who fell in love with Hannah, never got his chance to say goodbye to her either. Both guys are left with nothing but a vacant feeling in their hearts and have to live the rest their lives wondering "what if...". Both the girls felt like no one truly cared for them and it was just meaningless guy after meaningless guy. So as you can see they are both very similar in many ways. There were also many other characteristics in this book such as death, guilt, rumors, fake friends, and insignificant actions that can also be related to other books I've read and TV shows I've watched. In all of my life, this is the first book I have read that revolves around a character who is already dead and I hope that in the future I will be able to read more books like it and be able to make more connections.
